The Kiwa COBICO company, within its own laboratory, continues the activities of the research division of POB OPAKOMET, whose traditions date back to the 1960s. The research department itself was separated in 1996, when the CENTRAL LABORATORY was established. When it was officially opened, it concentrated all research and development work in the domestic metal packaging sector and obtained accreditation for the research it conducted.
In 2001 the CENTRAL LABORATORY changed its legal form and started operating as a newly established Company. Initially, the Company operated under the name of Ośrodek Badań i Certyfikacji Opakowań Sp. z o.o. (Ltd) and after several name transformations the Company adopted its final name COBICO Sp. z o.o. (Ltd) , which is historically an abbreviation of Centralny Ośrodek Badań i Certyfikacji Opakowań (Central Packaging Research and Certification Facility).

Also in 2001, within COBICO, the Certification Office was established, which initially dealt only with certification of metal packaging and in the same year received the accreditation of PCA (Polskie Centrum Akredytacji – Polish Accreditation Center).

In the following years, COBICO extended its scope of activity to organic farming, packaging and packaging waste, regional and traditional products (European Union schemes known as PDO (protected designation of origin), PGI (protected geographical indication) and TSG (traditional speciality guaranteed)), PQS (Pork Quality System) , “Jakość Tradycja” food certification system - Quality Tradition" scheme the national system of food quality, QAFP (Quality Assurance for Food Products), IPR integrated plant production, ESTA and QMP (Quality Meat Program) systems.

In November 2021, COBICO joined the KIWA group, which is one of the 20 leaders in the global TIC (Testing, Inspection and Certification) market.

In December 2023 legal entity name changed to Kiwa COBICO (Ltd).
